Biography

A scholar in context

Al-Maḥallī was an Egyptian Shāfiʿī jurist, theologian, and teacher. He began the concise commentary later known as Tafsīr al-Jalālayn, explaining vocabulary, syntax, referents, and interpretive difficulties with remarkable economy.

After his death, al-Suyūṭī completed the work in a matching style, producing one of the most enduring introductory tafsīrs.
