Biography

A scholar in context

Al-Qurṭubī was an Andalusī-born Mālikī jurist and commentator. His al-Jāmiʿ li-aḥkām al-Qurʾān is especially valued for its detailed treatment of legal verses while also engaging grammar, readings, hadith, theology, and moral instruction.

The work shows how exegesis could function simultaneously as scriptural commentary and a wide-ranging juristic encyclopedia.
